Last Thurs. the 30
th Jessie, Betty(my neighbor) and I went on a much needed trail ride. We had so much fun. We went east of town to
Slavin Canyon. This was an "exploration" trip. I wasn't sure how far i could drive up to the canyon and still be able to turn around when it was time to go so we parked out in the flats about a mile from the mouth of the canyon. Due to a cattle
guard and a really tight gate we weren't able to follow the rode all the way in but that didn't matter, we were on horses so we decided to follow the fence line which went down the side of the canyon. It was a lot of fun going up and down the hills, crossing the creek that the horses were
certain they were going to melt if their feet got wet, and just enjoying some time out. The weather was perfect, not to hot and not to cool. We got to see some really cool birds, American
Arvocets but I forgot my camera in the truck so I didn't get any pics during the ride-I'll do better next time. When we got started I was a bit
pre-occupied with getting the horses ready to go since this was a first time with
Riata and Nina hadn't been out in a long time. Jessie did really good with Nina and had a blast and of course is ready to go again-not that I blame her. We are planning on going back since I know now that I can drive into the canyon, past the cattle
guard and still be able to turn around. I'm hoping to go again this coming week.
Anyhow, I did get a few pics when we got back. We were gone for a little over 2 hours.
Jessie back at the truck getting a snack.
Azule came along and did great but the poor old man was
definitely feeling his age and being out of shape. When we got back, he got in the truck and that is where he stayed until we got home.
Riata-this was her first big trail ride and she was great! She climbed the hills like a pro, navigated the terrain super and eventually worked up the courage to get across the creek-that took some encouragement, patience and
persistence.
Nina was great too. She took good care of Jessie but was feeling her out of shape body and some age as well, not to mention that she still a bunch of her winter coat.
Here is
Cheif and my neighbor Betty. They have been out numerous times trail riding in the past. We all had a great time.
Its big and open around here.
Waiting and ready to load up.
Another canyon that needs exploring.
